Abstract: Nigeria has gone through trials and tribulations. The country has gone through the era of recession, the era of economic boom, when Nigeria was selling at $100 per barrel and was producing 2.2 billion barrels a day up to the period when the country experienced SAP. The country had myriad of challenges in recent times ranging from security (ethno-religious conflict, terrorism, insurgency, farmers-herders conflict, etc), economic (poverty, agitation for resource control), political (power shift, secession, corruption) and a host of other social problems.

Abstract: A political party is generally described as an organized body of people who share common principles and cherish certain common goals regarding the politicalsystem. A political party operates and seeks political power through constitutional means to translate its policies into practice. It is a body of like-minded people having similar views on matters of public concern.From the above mentioned definitions of political parties, following can be identified as their main characteristics:a political party is an organized group of people;the organized group of people believe in common principles and common goals;its objectives revolve around seeking political power through collectiveefforts;it employs constitutional and peaceful methods in seeking control over the government through elections; and while in power, it translates its declared objectives into governmental policies.The experience of functioning of political parties in India during the last six decades indicates that by and large they have been instrumental in shaping public opinion,creating political awareness, and imparting political education to the people
