AWOJUYIGBE, Julius Ojo
Abstract:
This paper examines the disparities in service delivery within the Ekiti Southwest Local Government of Ekiti State, Nigeria, between 2009 and 2013, focusing on the profound influence of local governance. Through qualitative interviews and a thorough analysis of existing literature, the study identifies systemic issues such as inadequate constitutional autonomy, financial mismanagement, and a lack of public participation that hinder equitable service distribution. The findings reveal that state monopolistic tendencies have compromised local government operations, resulting in significant gaps in essential services for the populace. Moreover, the study emphasizes the need for constitutional reforms to clarify the status of local governments as the third tier of governance, thus ensuring greater accountability and transparency. Recommendations include enhancing local government financial independence, fostering civic engagement, and promoting effective leadership to strengthen the capacity for service delivery. This research contributes to the discourse on governance in Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of empowering local institutions for sustainable development and improved quality of life for citizens.
