  • THEROLES PLAYED BY DAILY TIMES NEWSPAPER IN DEEMPHASISING PARTISANSHIP IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF POLITICAL HISTORY OF NIGERIA BEFORE AND AFTER INDEPENDENCE.

Ifoh StanleyObiorah & Amodu Akeem (Ph.D.)

Abstract: The Daily Times followed a wise course because during the colonial era, the newspaper remained quiet, aloof and unconcerned in the national struggle for an independent in Nigeria. The newspaper was controlled by the British business enterprises and was basically interested in exploiting a hitherto untapped and potentially rich market with a very active media audience. The newspaper became one of the victims of the utter lack of vision, ruthlessness and viciousness that characterized the Second Republic. Even since the collapse of the Second Republic in 1983, the Daily Times newspaper continued to battle with the constraints of its ownership structure and its social responsibilities as a foremost newspaper organization. To achieve the goal of the paper it adopts the Social ConstructionismTheory as its theoretical framework. The research method adopted in this study is secondary method and historical in nature. The population of the study encompasses various stakeholders: journalists, editors, politicians, readers, and historical figures involved with the newspaper. The findings of the study shows the roleplayed by daily times newspaper in deemphasising partisanship in the construction of political history of Nigeria before and after independence. The study also identified harsh economic policies of the government, distribution costs, and lack of utility and depreciating income of the readership as other economic factors that affected the fortunes of the newspaper which may have contributed to its demise. Based on the findings the study recommends that there is nothing wrong in government owning a newspaper, so long as each entity respects the sanctity and operational boundary of each other.

AWOJUYIGBE, Julius Ojo

Abstract: This paper examines the disparities in service delivery within the Ekiti Southwest Local Government of Ekiti State, Nigeria, between 2009 and 2013, focusing on the profound influence of local governance. Through qualitative interviews and a thorough analysis of existing literature, the study identifies systemic issues such as inadequate constitutional autonomy, financial mismanagement, and a lack of public participation that hinder equitable service distribution. The findings reveal that state monopolistic tendencies have compromised local government operations, resulting in significant gaps in essential services for the populace. Moreover, the study emphasizes the need for constitutional reforms to clarify the status of local governments as the third tier of governance, thus ensuring greater accountability and transparency. • Criticism of Morality, Religion, and Rationalism in Charvaka and Jaina Philosophies in Comparison to Indian and Western Thought

Dr. Bhupendra Debbarma

Abstract: Within the framework of Indian philosophical discourse, the Charvaka and Jaina philosophies offer distinct criticisms of morality, religion, and rationalism. These ideologies provide unique perspectives that radically challenge the traditional mode of thinking. The Charvaka school promotes a practical and utilitarian approach to life. The school in question is characterized by materialism and atheism, explicitly dismissing religious authority, moral absolutism, and intellectual curiosity. Conversely, the Jain faith is distinguished by its refusal to embrace materialism and its express disapproval of particular religious practices. Among the principles of Jainism are spiritual liberation, ethical discipline, and nonviolence. This study analyses the parallels and distinctions between these criticisms and Indian philosophical traditions, including Vedanta and Buddhism, as well as Western philosophical methodologies like as rationality and empiricism. The objective of this study is to examine the influence of these criticisms on wider ethical and philosophical debates by employing this methodology.
