Abstract: This research explores the rise, expansion, and influence of the gig economy in India, a rapidly evolving sector shaped by technological innovation and changing employment trends. As traditional job structures give way to flexible, short-term engagements, this research investigates the composition of the gig workforce, its contribution to the national economy, and highlights the key challenges faced by gig workers. The paper employs a descriptive methodology, drawing on secondary data from government reports, academic literature, and statistical sources. Key findings reveal a steady increase in gig employment, with projections indicating a workforce of 23.5 million by 2030. The sector is also expected to play a vital role in contributing to India’s GDP and generating employment opportunities, particularly in the non-agricultural sector. However, gig workers face several issues, including a lack of job security, social protection, and legal recognition. The study also discusses recent labour codes and policy initiatives aimed at regulating the gig sector and improving worker welfare. Through data analysis and literature insights, this research highlights the need for stronger regulatory frameworks, inclusive policies, and skill development programs to ensure the sustainable growth of India’s gig economy.
