Abstract: This article delves into the emergence and growth of the Shakti cult in Karnataka, emphasizing its historical, cultural, and ritualistic dimensions. The Shakti cult, centered around the worship of the divine feminine energy, has become a key aspect of the region’s spiritual landscape. The study traces the origins of Shakti worship in Karnataka from pre- Vedic times through the rise of major dynasties such as the Chalukyas and Hoysalas. It also explores the integration of local deities with Vedic and Puranic traditions, contributing to the development of a diverse and complex religious tradition. Rituals associated with the Shakti cult, such as animal sacrifices, festivals like Mysore Dasara, and folk performances like Bhoota Kola and Yakshagana, are examined in detail. Additionally, the article addresses how modernity and urbanization have influenced traditional Shakti practices while also highlighting the continued relevance of the cult in contemporary Karnataka society.
