Abstract: The following paper aims at dissecting two novels- one depicting sufferings of women in the east (England) and the other in the west (Afghanistan). The two dissimilar novels viz. “Tess of the D’Urbervilles” by Thomas Hardy and “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khaled Hosseini when studied with some insight into each other actually bring out Tess and Mariam as similar in their entire course of life and destiny. Both the women are pure as they leave the lap of nature at a very tender age and without having a glimpse of the cruel people waiting outside they become victims of oppression and rejection.

Abstract: हिंदी उपन्यास का विकास और उद्भव हिंदी साहित्य के इतिहास का महत्वपूर्ण अध्याय है। यह यात्रा 19वीं सदी के उत्तरार्ध में प्रारंभ हुई और समय के साथ यह साहित्य का एक लोकप्रिय और समृद्ध विधा बन गई। हिंदी में उपन्यास का उद्भव आधुनिक काल में हुआ, जब पश्चिमी साहित्य के प्रभाव और भारतीय समाज में होने वाले बदलावों ने इस विधा को जन्म दिया। हिंदी उपन्यास की शुरुआत में दो प्रमुख प्रेरणाएँ थीं। पश्चिमी साहित्य का प्रभाव यूरोपीय उपन्यास परंपरा का प्रभाव, विशेष रूप से अंग्रेजी उपन्यास, हिंदी उपन्यास के उद्भव का आधार बना।भारतीय समाज और बदलाव समाज में सुधार आंदोलनों और आधुनिक विचारधाराओं ने ऐसी कहानियों की माँग की, जो समाज का दर्पण बन सकें। हिंदी उपन्यास अपने उद्भव से लेकर वर्तमान तक समाज और समय के बदलावों को चित्रित करता आया है। यह केवल एक साहित्यिक विधा नहीं है,बल्कि समाज के विकास और संघर्षों का दर्पण भी है। बाबू देवकीनंदन खत्री से लेकर प्रेमचंद, और आज के समकालीन लेखकों तक, हिंदी उपन्यास ने हर युग की जरूरत और संवेदना को व्यक्त किया है।
