  • POETRY : ON LANGUAGE FORM AND PATTERN

Dr. Anjum Islam

Abstract: Language is patterned on a more abstract level than phonology or graphology this level of abstraction is called ‘form’. There are two components of the level ‘form’ grammar and lexis, each including different kinds of patterns. Patterns of grammar are more general and fewer in number than those-of lexis. Grammar patterns include categories like word, clause, sentence, subject complement, noun, adverb and even sets of words like ‘and’, ‘if’, ‘you’ and so forth. Each of these categories and sets also has a meaning. The categories of grammar being very general, give us only a skeleton of a text. Grammar can inform us that someone is doing something to someone else, but it is the lexical items which tell us whom or what these general roles refer to Lexis is a part of form having its own distinguishing patterns and relations.

  • The politics of literature

Dr. Nirmal Atri

Abstract: No work of art is created in a social political vacuum. No writer is free of social political attitude whether conscious or unconscious. Also these attitudes mostly favour the ruling Elite and the status quo. This short paper attempts to bring out the politics in literary works. Beginning now with Aristotle's Poetics. Of course, he is not the first to practice politics and literature but he is perhaps the first to state his political prejudices in such a blatant manner. Aristotle says that status is an important requirement in a tragic Hero. The tragic Hero must be a person of high social status. There was more than just consideration in Aristotle prescribing high social status as a necessary requirement for his tragic Hero.

Abstract: Novels and films are media to express human life in terms of conflict with self, society, men, Nature and supernatural forces. Novels and films are two significant domains of transforming culture to literature. The concept of film being story based soon introduced the notion of film adaptation, which is the transfer of a printed text in a literary genre film. Transcreativity from print to screen is not new, it was prevailing from time immemorial. Novels facilitated through words whereas with subtle introduction of visual imagery films convey lot of meaning.

  • The 1920s America and Sinclair Lewis

Pavitra Poorna S R

Abstract: Sinclair Lewis’s satirical depiction of American society through his novels, particularly those from the 1920s and 1930s—Main Street, Babbitt, and Arrowsmith—captured the attention of both readers and critics alike. He remains celebrated as one of the foremost satirists, using his writings to illuminate the American society of his era in a satirical light, with the aim of redeeming, reconstructing, and rejuvenating its declining standards, thus highlighting one of the greatest civilisations in the world. His remarkable success established him as a beloved American author and an internationally acclaimed writer. In 1930, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, recognising his substantial impact on the literary landscape. The paper “The 1920s America and Sinclair Lewis” examines the three novels mentioned to understand Lewis’s critique of American society and its values. \\\\r\\\\n
