Abstract:
This paper aims to advance the understanding of variational and divergence symmetries in the context of maximal symmetry ordinary differential equations (ODEs), covering both linear and nonlinear cases. The scope of the work includes ODEs of arbitrary order that exhibit maximal symmetry, providing a unified treatment for a broad class of equations. The methodology involves a systematic investigation of variational symmetries, utilizing both the standard and alternative Lagrangians, and deriving explicit first integrals through symmetry analysis. The principal findings are encapsulated in theorems and conjectures that characterize the structure of variational symmetry algebras for these equations. Notably, the study highlights significant distinctions in symmetry properties when alternative Lagrangians are considered, as opposed to the transformed Lagrangian approach. This leads to new insights into the underlying algebraic structures and enriches the theoretical framework for both linear and nonlinear ODEs. In conclusion, the results broaden the understanding of symmetry and integrability in ODEs, providing valuable tools for future research in the calculus of variations and mathematical physics.
