Socio-Demographic Modeling of Life Insurance Demand Patterns: Insights from the Indian Market
Dr. Amanpreetkaur
Abstract:
The Indian life insurance sector experienced significant growth by the close of the first decade of the 21st century, contributing robustly to economic development through its interactions with capital and financial markets, creating a sense of optimism. However, post-2010, the sector displayed volatility despite favourable demographic trends. Furthermore, India's life insurance consumption levels have consistently trailed behind those of developed nations. This paper aims to re-evaluate the demographic factors influencing the demand for life insurance in India, utilizing annual aggregate data from 1995 to 2014. The study employs an Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression model to investigate the effects of education, urbanization, and population as independent variables on life insurance demand. The findings may help insurers develop more effective marketing strategies to grow their business, while also guiding regulators and government policymakers in realizing their "Insurance Inclusion" goals. An in-depth analysis of India's demographic landscape, rich in untapped potential, could boost life insurance consumption and, in turn, promote the country’s economic growth.
